About ASJUSD

At ASJUSD, we believe growth happens when students feel connected, supported, and inspired—and we are proud to serve a community that shares this commitment.

Nestled at the crossroads of San Benito, Monterey, and Santa Cruz counties, the Aromas–San Juan Unified School District (ASJUSD) serves a close-knit and diverse community across approximately 100 square miles of California’s Central Coast. Our district includes the historic city of San Juan Bautista, the rural community of Aromas, and surrounding unincorporated areas—each contributing to the rich character and shared identity of our schools.

Located just 38 miles south of San Jose and 15 miles north of Salinas along U.S. Highway 101, ASJUSD is uniquely positioned at the intersection of opportunity, innovation, and community connection. Rooted in agricultural traditions and strengthened by a growing spirit of collaboration and creativity, our district is committed to preparing students for success in an ever-changing world.

Formed in 1991 through the unification of the San Juan Union and Pajaro Valley Unified School Districts, ASJUSD serves students from transitional kindergarten through grade 12. Our youngest learners attend Aromas School and San Juan School, while students continue their educational journey at Anzar High School, a small, inclusive campus recognized for its strong relationships, student voice, and commitment to preparing graduates for college, career, and life.

Guided by our vision to cultivate an inclusive and vibrant community that empowers today’s students to thrive in tomorrow’s world, ASJUSD is focused on academic excellence, social-emotional well-being, and meaningful student engagement. Our work is grounded in a strategic plan that prioritizes strong instruction, safe and supportive learning environments, innovation, and partnerships with families and the broader community.

The district is governed by a five-member Board of Trustees, elected by the community and committed to responsible governance, transparency, and student-centered decision-making. Working in partnership with the Board, Superintendent Dr. Barb Dill-Varga and district leadership support continuous improvement and ensure that every student is known, supported, and challenged to reach their full potential.

At ASJUSD, we believe growth happens when students feel connected, supported, and inspired—and we are proud to serve a community that shares this commitment.
