Aromas-San Juan Unified School District is committed to ensuring that every student has full and equal access to a free public education, regardless of immigration status, citizenship status, or religious beliefs. This page provides families with information about their educational rights and district practices related to immigration status.

Right to a Free Public Education

Children have a right to a free public education, regardless of immigration status, citizenship status, or religious beliefs. When enrolling a child, schools must accept a variety of documents from the student's parent to demonstrate proof of the child's age or residency. No information about citizenship or immigration status, or Social Security number, is required to enroll in school.

District Data and Information Practices

Aromas-San Juan Unified School District will not release student information to third parties for immigration-enforcement purposes unless the parent/guardian consents, or as required by a valid judicial subpoena, judicial warrant, or court order.

Planning for Family Safety

Parents have the option to provide the school with emergency contact information, including secondary contacts, to identify a trusted adult guardian who can care for a minor student in the event the parent is detained or deported. Parents also have the option to complete a Caregiver's Authorization Affidavit or a Petition for Appointment of Temporary Guardian of the Person, which may enable a trusted adult to make educational and medical decisions for a minor student. Families are encouraged to keep emergency contact information current with their child's school.

Reporting Discrimination or Harassment

Students have the right to report a hate crime or file a complaint with the school district if they are discriminated against, harassed, intimidated, or bullied on the basis of actual or perceived nationality, ethnicity, or immigration status. Contact your child's school office, or the District's Human Resources Director, for more information.

The Attorney General's School Guidance and Model Policies document is also available for review. This document includes additional information on family safety plans, the Caregiver's Authorization Affidavit, and the importance of keeping emergency contact information current.
