• Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) – Governs access to and disclosure of student education records (20 U.S.C. § 1232g).
• Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) – Restricts collection of personal information from children under age 13 (15 U.S.C. §§ 6501–6506).
• Student Online Personal Information Protection Act (SOPIPA) – California law prohibiting operators of K–12 educational websites and applications from selling or commercially using student data (Cal. Bus. & Prof. Code § 22584).
• Protection of Pupil Rights Amendment (PPRA) – Requires parental consent for certain surveys and marketing activities involving students (20 U.S.C. § 1232h).
• Children's Internet Protection Act (CIPA) – Requires internet safety policies for schools receiving E-rate funding.
• California Education Code §§ 49073–49079.7 – Governs access to and privacy of pupil records in California.
• AB 1584 – Requires that contracts with third-party digital service providers comply with California student data privacy requirements.
• California Privacy Rights Act (CPRA) – Provides additional rights to California residents regarding personal information (Cal. Civ. Code § 1798.100 et seq.).

When you visit www.asjusd.org, we may automatically collect limited technical information to improve our website, including:

We do not use cookies or tracking technologies for commercial advertising. This data is collected in aggregate and is not linked to individual identities.

Student Information
ASJUSD collects student data only for legitimate educational purposes. Student education records are governed by FERPA and California Education Code. We do not collect student data through this public website. Student information entered through district-managed educational platforms (e.g., student information systems, learning management systems) is subject to separate agreements aligned with FERPA, SOPIPA, and AB 1584.

ASJUSD uses collected information only for the following purposes:

• Providing educational programs and services to students
• Communicating with parents, guardians, and community members
• Complying with applicable laws and regulations
• Improving the functionality and accessibility of our website
• Responding to requests submitted through official district channels

We do not sell personal information, use student data for targeted advertising, build behavioral profiles on students, or disclose information to third parties for any non-educational commercial purpose.

ASJUSD's public website (www.asjusd.org) is not directed at children and does not knowingly collect personal information directly from children under the age of 13 through this site. Parents or guardians who believe their child has submitted personal information to this website should contact us immediately so we may delete it.

For district-operated educational platforms used by students, ASJUSD acts as the authorized agent of parents under COPPA, and we ensure that such platforms do not use student information for commercial purposes.

Under FERPA, parents and eligible students (age 18 or older) have the right to:

Inspect and review the student's education records maintained by the District within 45 days of a request.
Request correction of records believed to be inaccurate, misleading, or in violation of the student's privacy rights.
Consent to disclosures of personally identifiable information from education records, except as authorized by FERPA.
File a complaint with the U.S. Department of Education's Student Privacy Policy Office regarding an alleged failure to comply with FERPA.

ASJUSD designates certain student information as "directory information" that may be disclosed without prior consent, unless a parent or eligible student has opted out. Directory information includes: student name, grade level, school of attendance, participation in officially recognized activities and sports, and dates of attendance.

Parents and eligible students may opt out of the release of directory information by submitting a written request to the District Office at the beginning of each school year. The annual FERPA notification provided to families contains specific opt-out instructions.

Consistent with the Children's Internet Protection Act, ASJUSD maintains an Internet Safety Policy governing student use of district technology. This policy includes technology protection measures (content filters), and addresses access to inappropriate material, unauthorized disclosure of personal information by minors, and unauthorized access (hacking).

Students and staff using district technology are subject to the District's Acceptable Use Policy and Technology Use Agreement.

Our website may contain links to external websites operated by third parties, such as state agencies or educational organizations. ASJUSD is not responsible for the privacy practices of external websites. We encourage you to review the privacy policies of any third-party sites you visit.

All vendors and service providers that access student data on behalf of ASJUSD are required, pursuant to AB 1584, to enter into written agreements that: prohibit the sale of student data; prohibit using student data for non-educational advertising; require data security safeguards; and require deletion of student data upon request or contract termination.

ASJUSD employs reasonable administrative, technical, and physical safeguards to protect personal information from unauthorized access, disclosure, alteration, or destruction. However, no electronic transmission or storage system is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.

In the event of a data breach involving student or personal information, ASJUSD will notify affected individuals in accordance with California law (Cal. Civ. Code § 1798.82).

ASJUSD reviews this Privacy Policy annually and will update it as needed to reflect changes in law, technology, or district practices. The effective date at the top of this page reflects the date of the most recent revision. Continued use of our website following posted changes constitutes acceptance of those changes.
