CREDIT RECOVERY OPTIONS

Edgenuity on-line program offers opportunities for students who are behind in credits to catch up. This work must be coordinated with Christina McCawley, Administrative Support, and the student's Advisor.

FULL INCLUSION MODEL

Modified only by offering a Study Skills support class as per IEP, Anzar is a full-inclusion school. This means that all Resource and ELL students are mainstreamed into college prep content area classes, and that All teachers consider All students their responsibility. General Education teachers work together with Resource Specialists and paraprofessionals to offer needed support to all students.

GAVILAN COURSE AT ANZAR

In the past, Anzar students have had the opportunity to take Gavilan College's PSYC 10 Introduction to Psychology. Called the High Step program, our students receive college credit for these courses, which are taught by a Gavilan professor on Canvas. It's a wonderful way to receive college credits while concurrently enrolled in high school, and we had a healthy interest expressed via survey in this particular course for this year.

BACKWARDS DESIGN FOR ALL ANZAR COURSES

In addition to the shared Habits of Mind (EPERRs), all Anzar teachers also share the practice of Backwards Design with their curriculum. In a nutshell, this practice requires teachers to identify what essential questions and/or essential understandings will be at the hub of each unit of study, before the unit is begun. Also before the unit is begun, teachers plan and design the assessment that they will give (could be a test, a final paper, a project, a presentation, a combination of several...) that will evaluate if students learned/ mastered those essential understanding and/or if they can thoughtfully answer those essential questions. It isn't until this is done that teachers begin planning the lesson activities that will lead to that ending. This way, teachers can continuously track themselves, asking, "Is this activity directly leading to my planned and desired outcomes?" The unit is identified and the essential questions/understanding posted in each classroom throughout the unit, so that students can also continuously track what they are doing, and why they are doing it. In this spirit, we welcome the, "Why are we doing this?" type of questions that students so often ask. This practice is standard across content areas.

COURSE SEQUENCE OFFERED AT ANZAR

All content-area courses offered at Anzar are UC-approved college-preparatory courses, as well as aligned with the Common Core Standards. A list of class offerings can be found in Appendix B of the Student-Parent Handbook (see Homepage).

Math

(not grade dependent) 

Sequence: Geometry, Algebra OR Advanced Algebra, Statistics, Pre-Calculus, Calculus (in partnership with Gavilan College)

Statistics is also available, with a number of places where it can fit in the traditional sequence. Students start their high school math sequence according to previous classes/ foundation, as per math placement. However, beginning in the fall of 2015, all freshmen were placed in Geometry, unless they had Geometry in 8th grade in a different district. From Geometry, they go to either Algebra or second year Algebra; an Algebra assessment given in the spring of their 9th grade year indicates which is most appropriate.

Science (flowchart)

Grade 9: Biology

Grade 10: Earth Science, + Chemistry (as a second Science class for those recommended by their Science teacher)

Grade 11: Chemistry and/or AP Biology, Physics (a few students will take their second year of Integrated Science this year). Integrated Science 3 is also available.

Grade 12: Chemistry, AP Biology, Physics, and Integrated Science 3.

*note: Anzar alternates AP Biology with Physics, every other year. Chemistry is a pre-req. for those courses, but can be taken simultaneously = 2 Science courses in same year.

Health (semester course) must be taken (not grade dependent, but rec. for 11th & 12th graders)

World Language

There are two "tracks" of Spanish, depending on student's home language. 

Sequence: Spanish 1, 2 and/or 3 OR Native Spanish Speaker 1, NSS 2 and/or NSS 3

Visual/ Performing Arts

(not grade dependent) 

The following courses are UC-approved Arts courses: Studio Art, Drama, Adv. Photography, and Ceramics. All can be repeated for credit (Studio Art is called Advanced Art after first year)

Culinary Arts is a UC-Approved Elective now

  • 2 years of Fitness are required by the state for graduation

  • All Graduation Exhibitions must be successfully completed for graduation

  • All Service Learning must be completed for graduation; class that counts for service learning are  Peer Tutoring.

  • Students needing extra support may be required to take Study Skills.

  • Other courses offered for electives credit include Office Aide, Library Aide, and Teacher's Aide
