April 1, 2020 Update on School Closure

Dear Students, Staff, Parents, and Community  

As mentioned previously, we are in a fluid environment, with changes happening very quickly. After the Aromas-San Juan Unified School District Governing Board took action to extend the school closure to May 1, 2020, there was information coming out of the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction, Tony Thurmond (see attached letter). His message stated, “Due to the current safety concerns and needs for ongoing social distancing, it currently appears that our students will not be able to return to school campuses before the end of the school year. This is in no way to suggest that school is over for the year, but rather we should put all efforts into strengthening our delivery of education through distance learning.” The message is clear that we continue to provide instruction to students through the end of the school year.

Our County Superintendent of Schools, Krystal Lomanto, quickly assembled the superintendents countywide to discuss the late-breaking news, and we discussed our collective recommendations to our Boards. The superintendents countywide have supported one another in the difficult decisions before us during these challenging times. A letter (see attached) was released today from the County Office of Education in collaboration with all superintendents in the County, supporting a recommendation to close schools through the end of the school year.

The ASJUSD Governing Board must approve any action to finalize an extension of the school closure. The consideration of this recommendation will be addressed at the Board’s next scheduled meeting on April 8, 2020.

I will be working with the District’s administrative team to continue our efforts to deliver education to our students through the end of the school year. Additional information with more detail will be forthcoming later this week.

Meals to children in the community will continue through the end of the school year. Children are provided with breakfast and lunch in our District, ages 0 to 18 years old. Meals are available at Aromas and San Juan Schools via a drive-through option from 10:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. This program includes all children that live in the community, including those that may not attend our schools. We are also providing baby food/formula for infants.

Estimados estudiantes, personal, padres y comunidad  

Como se mencionó anteriormente, estamos en un ambiente fluido, con cambios que ocurren muy rápidamente. Después de que la Junta de Gobierno del Distrito Escolar Unificado de Aromas-San Juan tomara medidas para extender el cierre de la escuela hasta el 1 de mayo de 2020, hubo información procedente de la Oficina del Superintendente de Instrucción Pública, Tony Thurmond (ver carta adjunta). Su mensaje decía: "Debido a las actuales preocupaciones de seguridad y a la necesidad de un distanciamiento social continuo, actualmente parece que nuestros estudiantes no podrán regresar a los campus escolares antes del final del año escolar. Esto no significa en modo alguno que la escuela haya terminado el año, sino que debemos poner todos los esfuerzos en fortalecer nuestra entrega de educación a través de la educación a distancia". El mensaje es claro, que continuamos proporcionando instrucción a los estudiantes hasta el final del año escolar.  

Nuestra Superintendente de Escuelas del Condado, Krystal Lomanto, rápidamente reunió a los superintendentes de todo el condado para discutir las últimas noticias, y discutimos nuestras recomendaciones colectivas a nuestras Juntas. Los superintendentes de todo el condado se han apoyado mutuamente en las difíciles decisiones que tenemos ante nosotros en estos tiempos difíciles. Hoy se publicó una carta (ver adjunto) de la Oficina de Educación del Condado en colaboración con todos los superintendentes del Condado, apoyando una recomendación para cerrar las escuelas hasta el final del año escolar.  

La Junta de Gobierno del ASJUSD debe aprobar cualquier acción para finalizar una extensión del cierre de escuelas. La consideración de esta recomendación será tratada en la próxima reunión programada de la Junta el 8 de abril de 2020.  

Trabajaré con el equipo administrativo del Distrito para continuar nuestros esfuerzos para ofrecer educación a nuestros estudiantes hasta el final del año escolar. Información adicional con más detalles se dará a conocer a finales de esta semana.

Las comidas para los niños de la comunidad continuarán hasta el final del año escolar. Los niños reciben el desayuno y el almuerzo en nuestro distrito, de 0 a 18 años. Las comidas están disponibles en las escuelas de Aromas y San Juan a través de una opción de auto-servicio desde las 10:30 a.m. hasta las 12:30 p.m. Este programa incluye a todos los niños que viven en la comunidad, incluyendo aquellos que no pueden asistir a nuestras escuelas. También proporcionamos alimentos y fórmulas para bebés.
