Dear San Juan Parents and Families, November, 2019
I wanted to share with you some school updates and how well your students are doing as we move into the fall and head toward the winter holidays.
Safety
Safety for all students and staff is our highest priority at San Juan School. We have already had three fire drills this year, as well as our earthquake drill held on 10/17, when we joined schools across California in The Great Shakeout. We held a Tier 3 emergency drill, including operationalizing our first aid station as we would in a real emergency.
Halloween in the Quad
We held our first annual Halloween festival in the school quad for our Preschool and Kindergarten students. It was a great time of fun and learning, planned by Ms. Ferreira, and operated by our middle school volunteers.
Parade/Trunk or Treat
Our Halloween Parade on 10/31 was an opportunity to build another great school/community connection. Our classes parade down the Alameda, calling on San Juan businesses for treats. After returning to campus, students were treated to a carnival with games from car trunks run by Anzar students.
College Week
We had many college events during College Week. We had a door décor competition, in which lcasses cecorated their class door for a favorite college or multiple colleges. The winner ws Mr. McMullen, whose students helped him decorate their classroom door to recognize UCLA, a southern California college.
Red Ribbon Week
During /red Ribbon Week, October 23 – 30, we renewed our individual and school-wide drug-free commitment. We also practiced our school-wide bully-free strategy: STOP, WALK, TALK –
STOP – ask the person to stop;
WALK – Walk away
TALK – speak to an adult
Part of our commitment to students is to empower each student with their own strength. Of course, ask for help right away if you need it. The same STOP WALK TALK strategy works for a child who is bullying – stop and think about what you are doing; walk away; ask an adult for help.
Technology
We have added five chromebook carts to our technology resources at San Juan. All students have access to technology each day, and are learning through our slate of technology curriculum, including Spatial-Temporal Math, Type to Learn, Footsteps to Brilliance, and more.
Movie Night
Thank you to our Dual Immersion Parent group for hosting a movie night on 10/25! Families were cozy with blankets and pillows in the gym while watching a family movie.
Welcome Back dance
Our Home and School Club parents hosted a middle school Welcome Back to School dance on 10/4. The DJ was great and everyone enjoyed the dance.
Save the Date
We have set a tentative date for our Fiesta Fun Run of May 16, 2020. You may want to save the date, although it is not finalized and may change.
Healthy Kids Survey
Our 7th grade students have completed the annual state-mandated Healthy Kids Survey and . Athletics
We have recently completed our first middle school sports season of the year, with Girls’ volleyball and coed flag football. We are now preparing for the start of Girls’ Basketball and Boys’ Soccer. At lunch, we play scrimmages between middle school students and teachers. Our teachers won the volleyball game, and are looking forward to our upcoming student vs. teacher flag football game.
Safety Patrol
Our new Safety Patrol in the parking lot is composed of middle school volunteers. They have been trained and are now providing safe and visible crossing escorts for younger Padre students.
