San Juan Eclipse Viewing
Solar Eclipse Monday April 8th - Safety Reminders On Monday, April 8th, there will be a partial solar eclipse visible in our area. While witnessing such a rare event can be incredibly exciting and educational, it's essential to ensure the safety of our students during this time. Ensuring student safety during the solar eclipse is critical. The District will be providing ISO certified eclipse glasses for our students at Aromas and San Juan Schools. We ask that parents and guardians review safety procedures with their students, especially regarding eye safety. Looking directly at the sun, even during an eclipse, can cause serious eye damage or even blindness. It's imperative that students understand to not attempt to view the eclipse without proper eye protection. We recommend using ISO-certified solar viewing glasses which the District will be providing at the elementary sites. Teachers and staff will be closely monitoring students during the eclipse. We kindly ask for your cooperation in reinforcing the importance of following their instructions regarding eclipse viewing. Alternative Viewing Methods: If you prefer your child not to participate in outdoor eclipse viewing activities, please notify us in advance. We will provide alternative indoor activities to ensure their safety. Educational Opportunity: Some of our teachers will be incorporating the solar eclipse into our curriculum, providing students with age-appropriate information about this phenomenon. It's a fantastic chance for them to learn about astronomy and the natural world. We appreciate your cooperation in ensuring the safety of all our students during this event. If you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to contact the school office.

BUS TRANSPORTATION ISSUE - PARENTS NEED TO SIGN A NOTE This year we are fortunate to have hired a Transportation Coordinator, Maria Solano. She is helping us follow best practices for keeping students safe and keeping us legally compliant. She has brought an issue to my attention that I need your help with. Our ASJUSD School Safety Plan includes a section on School Bus Transportation and the loading of student passengers at bus stops. I want to bring the following excerpt to your attention: “Students shall board and exit only at their designated school bus stop. In the event that a stop must be changed temporarily, a signed note from the parent or guardian of the student must be submitted to the School Office and a copy given to the driver prior to entering the bus and must include a valid contact phone number.” The problem is that we have a number of students who spontaneously decide to ride a friend’s bus home to the friend’s house or other location. We cannot continue to allow this to happen. First, we have no accurate list of who we picked up and where they were unloaded, should a student go missing. Second, some of our buses cannot take additional students as they are at full capacity. Third, for insurance purposes, we need parent permission via the signed note before we can take on that liability. Please talk with your children and let them know we will be refusing their admission to the bus unless they have a signed note from the parent and this note has been approved through their school principal’s office. Thanks for your understanding. Dr. Barb Dill-Varga Superintendent, ASJUSD
