A District that Values Professional Growth for ALL

We are a learning community and no matter our positions or roles, we strive to continue improving our practices in support of your children.

On October 6, we had a full day of professional learning customized to the needs of certain grade levels for teachers or  for job alike functions for classified staff.

US News Best High School

ANZAR Ranked the top HIGH SCHOOL in San Benito County

Once again, Anzar has garnered the coveted BEST HIGH SCHOOLS Award from US News and World Report. We were not only ranked the top HS in San Benito County but we have outpaced many adjacent high schools in Monterey and Santa Clara county as well. We are a well kept secret.

A public school that feels more like a private school with small class sizes, advisories, dual enrollment programs with Gavilan, AP programs, unique signature programs, and an excellent teaching staff!

If you want your child to be known and understood and supported through their high school years, Anzar is the place for you!

Support for our College Application Process at ANZAR

Thanks to the generous donation from community member, Pat Lerman and the Aromas San Juan Community Schools Foundation, every eligible Anzar High School  senior will receive a coupon voucher to apply to one California State University campus this year.

Application workshops will take place in Advisory on Tuesday and Wednesday, and at 6pm in the Library on Thursday, October 16th

Mission Village Voice Featuring Our Wonderful Employees

I am writing a short column for the local newspaper each month introducing one of our employees to the community.  Last month, I wrote about 5th grade teacher Teri Marshall. Coming next will be a feature on Martha Quezeda, library clerk. Both individuals are at San Juan School.  I will next find individuals –certificated and classified–at either Aromas or Anzar High School to spotlight!

September 17th TOWN HALL - Blueprint for the Future

About 35 ASJUSD stakeholders attended our recent Town Hall meeting titled, Blueprint for the Future. First we had a quick review by CBO Daniel Ornelas of past expenditures on facility projects funded by Measure M and O. Then Peartree+Belli architect Ismael Magana led discussion activities to review future opportunities for facility improvements at Aromas School and Anzar School funded by Measure D with funds left after San Juan School is completed.

The group of parents, students, teachers, and administrators shared their priorities on possible projects which will be reviewed by the Board of Trustees at the November 12 Board meeting. Some projects may start next summer.

Learning Spaces Classroom Renovations Continue

Pictured below is a newly renovated science classroom at Anzar High School. We will continue identifying classrooms in need of renovation and complete at least 3 or 4 next summer.

We are focused on renovating spaces that are in permanent structures as opposed to portables which may be replaced in the future.

Renovations

Music

In the past year, we have successfully brought art lessons and experiences to every K-8 classroom except for four classrooms. This year the work continues as our ART TOSA continues to build connections between our curriculum and art experiences, assisting teachers with the skills for continuing this work on their own or with her assistance.

Now it is time to start a plan for bringing music back to the district.  We have consolidated and stored a large number of musical instruments owned by the district and used in the past by school groups. These instruments were inventoried two years ago. While we are not able currently to hire a full time music teacher, we want to explore ways we can bring music first into our after school enrichment offerings.  We need to know who the musicians and music teachers are in the community! We want to find out which of our students are interested in music and may already be taking music lessons. Please look out for a survey we will send out in the next few weeks and if you are interested in possibly helping us jumpstart our music experiences, please let us know. You can also help us by letting others in the community know of our interest in seeking their help.  I was a student musician from grade 4 through my first year of college and know the value of music education. I also started my son in music as a 3 year old and he continued as a Suzuki cellist through tenth grade.  I saw the value it brought to him and I am sure it supported his understanding of mathematics. Please know we are committed to developing a plan to make this happen, starting with our after school programming.

Classrooms

San Juan School Progress

A small team of administrators visited the AMS factory in Manteca, CA and saw our actual San Juan School modular classrooms under construction. We are being told that they will be on our campus ready for teachers to move in sometime in the summer. The administration building is currently being built on site and should be ready for the principal and his staff to inhabit by the start of school in August of 2026 or earlier. Very exciting to see the plans coming to life! Next school year, the work will be on the MPR and district kitchen, preschool, and library.

All should be completed by the fall of 2027!

Parent Engagement

There are many ways for you to be involved in your child’s school. We have board meetings every month. They tend to be on the second Wednesday of the month. We have school and district meetings for parents of our English learners; those are our ELAC and DELAC meetings.

Each school has a home and school club or booster club. I am frequently joining a principal for a coffee for parents at each school site. Our Special Education department runs a CAC (community advisory council) for special education parents.  Please get involved!  More ideas and feedback from our parents help us as we work together to make our schools better!

Bond Oversight Committee

Once a year, a small committee representing different groups in the community convenes to conduct a review of how our bond monies have been spent, making sure we are in alignment with the intent of the Bond that voters passed.  This committee will meet at the District Office at 6pm on October 22, 2025.

October Reminders:

  • Facilities Committee Meeting - October 30, 2025
