Inter/Intradistrict Transfer Information

Students living within Aromas-San Juan Unified School District who wish to attend school outside of the district must complete an interdistrict transfer request form with Aromas-San Juan Unified School district on an annual basis. Every January the district opens the window to accept transfer requests for the following school year, and closes the window in April.

What is an Interdistrict Transfer?

An interdistrict transfer is required when families wish to enroll their student(s) in a school district other than the one assigned to their home address. This applies to students trying to transfer into and out of Aromas-San Juan Unified School District.

What is an Intradistrict Transfer?

An intradistrict transfer is required when families wish to move their student(s) from one school to another within Aromas-San Juan Unified School District.

Board Policy & Approval/Denial of Requests

The Superintendent or designee may approve interdistrict attendance permits for a student for any of the following reasons:

  1. To meet the child care needs of the student, only as long as the student's child care provider remains within district boundaries

  2. To meet the student's special mental or physical health needs as certified by a physician, school psychologist, or other appropriate school personnel

  3. When the student has a sibling attending in school in the receiving district, to avoid splitting the family's attendance

  4. To allow the student to complete a school year when the student's parents/guardians have moved out of the district during that year

  5. To allow the student to remain with a class graduating that year from an elementary, middle, or senior high school

  6. To allow a high school senior to attend the same school attended as a junior, even if the student's family moved out of the district during the junior year

  7. When the parent/guardian provides written evidence that the family will be moving into the district in the immediate future and would like the student to start the school year in the district

  8. When the student will be living out of the district for one year or less

  9. When recommended by the school attendance review board or by county child welfare, probation or social service agency staff in documented cases of serious home or community problems which make it inadvisable for the student to attend the school of residence

  10. When there is a valid interest in a particular educational program not offered in the district of residence

  11. To provide a change in school environment for reasons of personal and social adjustment

The Superintendent or designee may deny initial requests for interdistrict attendance permits due to limited district resources, overcrowding of school facilities at the relevant grade level, or other considerations that not arbitrary.

Per California Education Code section 46600-46601, it is within authority of either the home district or the receiving district to revoke an interdistrict transfer agreement. The local board or district superintendent may deny, revoke, or rescind an Interdistrict Transfer Agreement at any time in accordance with the district's rules and procedures. The Aromas-San Juan Unified School District may revoke or rescind your transfer for reasons, included but not limited to:

  • The student is excessively tardy or absent from school, or the student is brought to school excessively early or left excessively late.

  • The student fails to uphold appropriate behavior standards.

  • The student has poor academic performance.

  • False or misleading information was provided to the District.

  • Other conditions that occur that would render continuance inadvisable.

Inter/Intradistrict Transfer Process

Please complete the appropriate transfer form below and attach necessary documents. One form per student should be completed.

Parents/Guardians will be required to attach proof of residence for all requests. The following are acceptable proof to verify physical address:

  • Utility bills - water bill, electricity/gas bill, garbage/recycling bill, telephone (landline) bill, or propane bill.

  • Mortgage Statement or lease agreement.

  • Or, a notarized letter from the landlord.

Once forms are submitted, please allow 30 days for processing. All communication will be done through email.

If a student's interdistrict transfer request is denied, the Superintendent or designee shall, in writing, notify the parents/guardians of their right to appeal to the County Board of Education within 30 calendar days from the dare of the final decision. (Education Code 46600.2)

For an interdistrict transfer request received by the district 15 or fewer calendar days before the commencement of instruction in the school year for which the transfer is sought, the district will notify the parent/guardian of its final decision within 30 calendar days from the date the request was received.

For an interdistrict transfer request received by the district 15 or fewer days before the commencement of instruction in the school year for which the interdistrict transfer is sought, the district will notify the parent/guardian of its final decision as soon as possible, but no later than 14 calendar days after the commencement of instruction in the school year for which transfer is sought.
