#WeAreASJUSD Newsletter August 2024
Dear Parents,
We had an extremely smooth start to the school year on all of our school campuses! I am proud to say that we are “fully staffed,” air conditioning at Aromas and Anzar is up and running, and we keep moving forward on our various San Juan construction projects as we look forward to rebuilding that school during the next two years. But our greatest joy is to be back in session working with our scholars to help them reach their potential! August 30th marks my two year work anniversary, and I am very proud of everyone in the district for the progress we have made. We know there is more to accomplish, but we are well on the way to reclaiming our status as a Destination District! Thank you parents for your support and contributions to this worthy goal!
Sincerely,
Barbara Dill-Varga, Ed.D
Superintendent, Aromas-San Juan Bautista USD
Riding the Bus!
One of my goals this year is to join our bus drivers on each of their routes to better understand what their journey is like through the beautiful countryside of Aromas and San Juan Bautista as they pick up our children each school morning. I also want to understand our large rural communities and feel what it is like to make the journey to school each day. My first adventure was with Jesus on his route through the relatively flat agricultural fields near Lucy Brown Road and adjacent to route 156.
I boarded the bus at 7:15 and one hour later we returned to the bus yard having picked up and delivered about 67 students to San Juan School and Anzar High School. I was impressed by the politeness of our students, the dedication of their family members who waited at various stops with their children until the bus arrived, and the assistance that older students gave to younger ones still trying to get used to the bus trip. I know it was morning and everyone was still half asleep, but it was a polite, well-mannered group of young scholars. My next trip will be one into Aromas. I am eager to learn more.

Why ANZAR? (the first in a series to appear in Parent Newsletters, containing information about our flagship school)
Anzar is a small, rural public high school that feels like a private school.
We have the smallest class sizes of any area high schools in the tri-county area. Average class is 19:1. Our small size is our secret sauce. We are not a large comprehensive high school and we actually like it that way because it allows us to more easily “know our students by name and need.” Each student in our high school is part of a small class (Advisory) that stays together for four years and meets during a dedicated advisory period. Each advisor is a certificated teacher on staff who takes the time to help students navigate high school and who celebrates their progress along the way. Research reinforces how important it is for a student to have an important adult in the school who knows them well. These relationships are often life-changing and are what alumni talk about when they visit. You usually find advisories like this in elite private academies. I will share more information about Anzar in future newsletters.

Measure D
You will see a question on the ballot for the November 5, 2024 General Election that relates to our school district. This Bond Question is referred to as Measure D. If the voters pass Measure D, this bond will provide a future source of funding that will address needs identified in the ASJUSD Master Facilities Plan completed last year. These include improvements primarily to Anzar High School, Aromas School, and a small portion to complete Phase 3 of the San Juan School Project.
The new San Juan School Project is largely being funded by Measure O passed in 2020 and unfortunately, “less than expected” State matching funds. The 2020 bond anticipated a school priced at 2020 costs and as we are in 2024, those costs have increased. To complete the last phase of the project, we will need a portion of Measure D, should it pass.
On the ballot, you will see that Five Signers attached their name in support of it:
Jennifer Colby (Luna Gallery owner, retired CSUMB professor, and past board member);
Phil Esparza ( San Juan Bautista resident, Executive Director of El Teatro Campesino, Rotarian);
Jen Hankemeier (Aromas Home and School Club President; Aromas Soccer Club, parent);
Beth Welch ( San Juan Bautista local business owner, parent, San Juan Home and School club officer); and
Wayne Norton (Aromas Community Advocate, past parent, Rotarian).
As a district, we can, and will provide information about what the bond might cover. I am not legally allowed to advocate for it, but I am am happy to answer factual questions about what projects it might cover. We had a booth at Aromas Days and San Juan Days with some visual renderings of the site. We expect construction to start in January for San Juan School.

Dual Enrollment on Anzar Campus in our Hawk Academy
This year we have doubled the general education free college course offerings from Gavilan College on Anzar’s campus. They are taught by Gavilan professors with support provided by an Anzar teacher who meets with students to assist with homework completion and study skills. This year there are four courses offered to two cohorts of students:
Introduction to Psychology;
Personal Finance
Early Child Development
Mexican-American Cultural History.
All courses are CSU and UC transferable. All who take all four courses will leave with one semester of college credit for free! They also receive high school credit for these courses, as well!
Partnership with Hartnell College
We are beginning a partnership with Hartnell College to offer our students Mechatronics. We are now transporting 5 students to Hartnell for this course that runs two days a week, period one and two. Mechatronics is an “interdisciplinary branch of engineering that focuses on the integration of mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, electronic engineering and software engineering, and also includes a combination of robotics, computer science, telecommunications, systems, control, automation and product engineering.” We are excited to support the growth in this program.
Our New TOSAs (Teachers on Special Assignment) for ELD and the Arts
This year we have two new TOSAS. Sara Perez, formerly a teacher at San Juan School, is working as an English Language TOSA helping classroom teachers at both elementaries to assist their newcomers, English language learners, and all students with acquiring literacy skills. Sara pushes in to model strategies for teachers and assist with assessments and diagnosis of ability levels. The idea is for teachers to learn how to integrate designated English language instruction that will be good for all students. She also engages parents and builds strong partnerships to support their child’s success. Sarah Honeyhume is our visual and performing arts TOSA. She is working to bring the arts back into classrooms. Mrs. Honeyhume is helping teachers with lessons that provide students with artistic expression that connects across the content curriculum.
