ASJUSD Hosts Second Annual Career & College Expo

On January 22, Aromas-San Juan Unified School District hosted its second annual Career & College Expo in the Anzar High School Gymnasium. Close to 460 students participated in the event, which brought together education and industry partners to help students explore future college and career pathways.

Students in grades 6–8 attended in the morning, followed by Anzar High School students later in the day. Approximately 40 industry partners and representatives from several two- and four-year colleges shared information and insights about a wide range of professions and postsecondary opportunities.

Students prepared in advance by completing a career interest assessment to identify pathways aligned to their strengths and interests. They also participated in classroom lessons focused on professional communication—practicing how to introduce themselves, ask thoughtful questions, and connect conversations to their own postsecondary plans—ensuring meaningful engagement during the Expo.

We are proud to recognize Sebastian Sandoval Navarro, an 11th-grade student at Anzar High School, as the winner of the ASJUSD Career & College Expo Logo Contest. His creative design, developed from a hand-drawn concept into a polished digital logo using Adobe Illustrator and Canva, captured the spirit of the Expo. Sebastian received a $100 Visa gift card generously donated by ARCHES and will work with a graphic designer to finalize the logo.

The success of this event reflects the strength of our small, rural community and the valued partnerships that help inspire and guide our students toward their futures.

San Juan School New Classrooms

Modular classrooms were delivered to San Juan School site starting on Monday, January 27, 2026. During that week, about 50% of the classrooms were placed on ready foundations. The following modular classroom buildings were placed the week of February 2. In addition a lot of progress is being made on the new stick built Administration Building that will house the principal and his support front office staff, teacher support and work areas and areas for social emotional services for students.

We have ordered the furniture and these areas will be ready for the Fall of 2026, if not before.  Next school year, the other half of campus will be demolished and rebuilt and that includes a new library, kinder/preschool, and multi-purpose room including a new food service/cafeteria area. So exciting to see the progress!

Internship with Willis Construction

As part of ASJUSD’s Career and College Readiness system, which embeds real-world learning into classroom experiences, nine Anzar High School students completed internships with Larry Willis of Willis Construction. These Career Technical Education (CTE) capstone students from the Product Innovation and Design pathway designed and built concrete benches that are now installed across the Anzar campus.

This project reflects the district’s broader commitment to expanding Work-Based Learning beyond CTE courses to include all TK–12 classrooms. Our continuum includes guest speakers, industry tours, mentoring, internships, and capstone experiences—ensuring students at every grade level connect classroom learning to real-world application.

District AI Task Force Launched on February 5th

We convened a District Task Force to learn about and review the board policies for use of Artificial Intelligence in our schools. We have planned three meetings in the District Studio on Feb 5, March 12, and April 16. Meetings start with a light dinner at 5pm and end by 8pm. The Task Force includes teachers, administrators, parents and students.  Here are some quick points to know about AI and our schools.

What is AI? Artificial Intelligence (AI) refers to computer tools that can analyze information and generate responses such as text, images, or translations. Many students already encounter AI in everyday technology.

Why are schools addressing AI now? AI is changing how people learn, work, and communicate. Schools have a responsibility to help students understand AI, use it responsibly, and develop skills like critical thinking, creativity, and ethical decision-making.

Will AI replace teachers? No. Teachers remain essential. Learning is built on relationships, guidance, and human connection. AI is only a tool to support learning — not replace educators.

How might AI be used in our schools? When used appropriately, AI may:

  • Support accessibility (translation, text-to-speech)

  • Help personalize learning

  • Provide practice or feedback

  • Support creativity and problem-solving

All use is guided by clear expectations and educator oversight.

Can students use AI for homework? Students may not use AI to complete assignments dishonestly or submit AI-generated work as their own. Schools are developing clear guidelines about appropriate and inappropriate use.

How is student privacy protected? Schools must follow state and federal laws that protect student data. Districts carefully review tools before use and prioritize student privacy and safety.

What are the risks of AI? Risks include over-reliance on technology, bias in AI outputs, academic honesty concerns, and unequal access. These risks are why schools are approaching AI thoughtfully.

What does the California Department of Education recommend? The CDE encourages schools to:

  • Use AI ethically and responsibly

  • Teach students how AI works and its limits

  • Protect student data

  • Support educators with training

  • Keep learning human-centered

You can find many resources on the CDE (California Department of Education) website at: https://www.cde.ca.gov/ci/pl/aiincalifornia.asp

How can families help?

Families can:

  • Talk with children about responsible technology use

  • Reinforce honesty and integrity

  • Ask questions and stay informed

  • Partner with schools as practices evolve

Our goal: To prepare students for a future shaped by technology — while keeping learning safe, ethical, and centered on people.

We will communicate out the results of the task force and any changes to board policy that may occur.

Aromas School Town Hall

Principal Heather Howell has announced her retirement effective June 30, 2026. Her decade of service to Aromas School is greatly appreciated.  She will be missed!  To prepare for the next chapter of Aromas School, we are interested in providing parents with an opportunity to discuss what characteristics they are hoping for in their next principal, what programs they wish to see continue or developed, and other information that will help the district develop selection criteria.

Please join us in the Aromas School gymnasium on February 24, Tuesday, 2026, from 6-7:30 pm.  We have also sent a survey to all parents soliciting input especially helpful for those unable to attend the Town Hall meeting.

ANZAR SHAKE March 4th

Our ASJUSD Grade 8 students are heading into “Shake Season”! On March 4, all 8th-grade students will travel to Anzar High School for the inaugural ANZAR SHAKE, an employability skills competition designed to help students practice the essential skills needed for future college and career success.

This engaging (and yes, a little nerve-racking!) experience gives students the opportunity to practice a firm handshake, strong eye contact, professional conversation, and confident presence while interacting with our industry partners—professionals who may one day serve as future employers or mentors. Industry partners will serve as judges, scoring students using a rubric that evaluates handshake, body language, conversational skills, presence and politeness, and integrity.

The ANZAR SHAKE is part of our broader Career and College Readiness efforts, ensuring students develop meaningful, real-world employability skills beyond the screen. We are grateful to our industry partners who make this powerful learning opportunity possible.

Interdistrict Transfer Reminder: March 31st Deadline

Inter District Transfers (IDTs) The Board approved revisions to their board policies on IDTs at the December 17, 2025 Board meeting. See Board Policy 5117 and Administrative Regulation 5117. Both policies are posted on our website. For parents interested in transferring their students to other districts please note the following changes effective for enrollment during the 2026-2027 school year.

New Application Window: January through March 31, 2026. After March 31, we will not be accepting IDT applications. Renewals also need to be in by March 31.

A maximum cap on NEW IDTs has been established in board policy. The Board approved the following that applies to new IDT requests: A formal cap of no more than 4% of total district enrollment with a maximum of 10 new students from grade 9-12. Please note we are nearing our maximum for HS requests.

Tightened Approval Criteria of acceptable reasons for transfer is now in board policy. If you have questions, please contact the executive assistant to the superintendent, Marisa Soto at msoto@asjusd.org. Information can also be found on the district website.
